The Medicine Hat High Hawks senior boys basketball team continued to build on a strong season over the weekend.
The team extended its overall record to 17-1 by winning the Legendary Bobcat Bowl, hosted by Bishop O’Byrne and All Saints this past weekend in Calgary.
The tournament championship run began with Hat High overpowering Holy Trinity in an 80-52 opening victory. Kyle Bertram led the charge with 16 points, and Trey Watson contributed 15.
Hat High faced Bishop McNally from Calgary in the quarter-finals, coming out on top 83-71.
“McNally is a very physical team that uses their size and aggressiveness to win ball games,” head coach Chad Watson said. “We were able to use our speed and size to survive a very physical game.”
Arinze Aniagu led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Ashraf Ismail added 15 points as well.
In the semifinals, Hat High faced the host school, All Saints, doubling them up with an 83-40 victory. Trey Watson and Aniagu each contributed 16 points.
Hat High then faced the eighth ranked 4A team in the province, Sir Winston Churchill, for the gold medal.
The Hawks implemented a full out press, propelling them to an 83-63 victory.
Jada Bolok’s 24-point performance and Aniagu’s 19 points secured the championship title for Hat High.
The Hawks also came away with some individual accolades from the tournament. Bolok was named MVP and Aniagu received recognition as a tournament all-star. Trey Watson earned the Calgary Surge MVP award from the professional basketball team in the CEBL.
Hat High’s senior boys and girls teams will travel to Raymond tonight to take on the No. 2 ranked boys and No. 1 girls teams in the province, the Raymond Comets.
Those are the ASAA’s games of the week and will be on Telus Optik TV channel 1985 and Raymond Comets YouTube channel. The girls play at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:45 p.m.
