Police say a realistic pellet gun was the cause of a brief “public alert” put out Sunday night asking Hatters to avoid the South Flats.

Medicine Hat police reported that at about 6 p.m. on Jan. 28 they received a call from a member of the public that a person entered a home on the 800 block of 10th Street, SE with what appeared to be a handgun.

That prompted calls for the public to avoid the area, but after several hours authorities reported that the subject was fully co-operative and in possession of an air-soft pistol.

A photo of the item shows it closely resembles a black semi-automatic model handgun, though police say it doesn’t exceed any legal standard for charges to be laid.

Further, the person’s identity was confirmed by authorities who remind all residents to act with safety in mind at all times involving real or replica weapons.
