The city’s power plant likely set an all-time production record on Saturday night in response to a province-wide alert that the power system was strained.
The city produced 284 megawatts of power at 5 p.m. on Saturday just as the Alberta Electric System Operator called on Albertans to conserve as much power as possible to avoid rolling outages.
Medicine Hat is a self-sufficient supplier — meaning it doesn’t rely on imports, but does export surplus power to the grid at times of high demand.

Southland Transport cancels Monday’s bus routes
Southland Transportation school buses will be parked and plugged in on Monday.
Through social media posts, all three of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, Medicine Hat Public School Division and Prairie Rose School Division have announced no buses will run but they will remain open for students who can arrive safely.
MHPSD says they will make an announcement regarding Tuesday’s bus availability by 4 p.m. Monday.
Weather
After a weekend in the deep freeze and temperatures falling below minus-40C without the windchill on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, warmer weather is expected throughout the day Monday and going forward for the week.
A high of minus-22C is expected today, then daytime temperatures in the minus-teens until near freezing conditions at the end of the week.
Council
City council will sit for the first time in 2024 on Monday night.
On the agenda is a discussion of adding more money to grants for local groups to stage festivals and events.
Costs are rising the city’s new potable water treatment plant, being built near the river valley power plant site near Highway No. 1 and First Street.
Council will be asked to add to the budget due to regulatory delay and inflation on materials.
An operating model for Co-op Place will also be discussed, along with a request for more money to add staff for reorganized office that manages large city-owned venues, namely the arena and the Esplanade.

The week ahead
On Tuesday, the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede will announce the concert lineup for the 2024 Stampede, July 24-27.
The municipal planning commission will discuss a permit to redevelop a motel site in Riverside on Wednesday afternoon.
Tigers split weekend
The Medicine Hat Tigers picked up two of a possible four points against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
After losing 5-3 Friday on the road to Lethbridge, Medicine Hat bounced back with a 3-2 win Saturday. Shane Smith scored twice for a career high 21 goals on the season, Ethan McCallum only had to make 17 saves. A game story on the win can be found here.
The Tigers (26-13-2) host the Swift Current Broncos and newly acquired Conor Geekie on Tuesday.
