Much colder temperatures are expected in the week ahead after an extremely mild start to winter.

Environment Canada predicts cold arctic air will come south early, bringing snow and then temperatures in the -30C range starting on Tuesday.

Overnight flurries and lows of -10C are expected on the weekend before a brief reprieve to start the week.

A high chance of snow is expected Tuesday onward, with daytime highs of -25C and -30C forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Annual records from Environment Canada state that 2023 was the second warmest in 136 years of record keeping, having recorded an average mean temperature of 7.8C, above the long-term average mean of 6.1C.
