New programming and extended hours have been added to the Honeycomb House teen space at Medicine Hat Public Library thanks to the increased funding the library will be receiving in 2024 from the City of Medicine Hat.

Honeycomb House welcomes all students in Grades 7 through 12, up to age 19, and they have programs throughout December for youth to partake in. Drop-in hours are now 3:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 1-4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are programs each Wednesday evening, all beginning at 6 p.m. throughout the month, with Taylor Swift-inspired bracelets on Dec. 6, a video game tournament on Dec. 13, Percy Jackson camp beads on Dec. 20 and Joy Jars 2024 resolutions on Dec. 27. Additionally, there are two other Joy Jars dates, Dec. 9 for Glitter Sensory at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17 for Make a Gift at 2 p.m. On Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. there will be a video game tournament and Christmas cookies.

“We had a request from teens for more organized programs in the Honeycomb House during drop-in hours,” explained youth and community librarian Stephanie Kuhn. “We’ve added a new drop-in date (Wednesdays) for these special events starting in December and some on weekends. On the first Wednesday we will be making Taylor Swift-inspired friendship bracelets, and throughout the month making various crafts in jars, aka ‘joy jars,’ such as glitter sensory jars, a hot chocolate kit to give as a gift and New Year’s resolution jars.”

For ages 10 through 19 there is a seasonal reading challenge taking place from Dec. 1 through to Jan. 7. Reading logs can be picked up at the children’s library desk and must be returned on or before Jan. 7 for a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards to River Bee Books.

MHPL will be closed on several days throughout December, with the first on Monday for a staff professional development day.

Chris Brown, head of marketing and community engagement, said, “Professional Development Day is a way for library staff to sharpen existing skills and gain new knowledge, reconnect with each other and spark interest in new projects and goals. The hope is we can energize all library staff and in turn we’ll be able to provide the best service possible for our patrons and visitors and the entire community.”

Additionally, the library will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, MHPL will close at 4:30 p.m.
