According to a variety of media sources, this week could provide further drama in the ongoing disagreement between the Danielle Smith government and Ottawa over clean electricity grid regulations.

Details as well could be released on the province’s support for carbon capture and sequestration projects.

Both issues have major implications for the City of Medicine Hat’s power plant and distribution network.

The last federal budget outlined potential for 15 percent of new green power plants would be extended to municipal power providers and Crown Corporations, leading to a very positive initial reaction from local power officials.

As well, initial portions of the city-led CCUS strategy is underway this winter with exploratory drilling north west of the city.

Regardless of the source of power, city administrators say the local grid will need to be reinforced to deliver more power to customers who are requesting larger and larger connections tot he power system.

Tigers weekend

The Medicine Hat Tigers were led by Andrew Basha’s four-goal, five point performance in a 6-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday. A full game story can be found here.

The Tigers also saw WHL debuts of twin brothers Liam and Markus Ruck this week. Medicine Hat (16-6-2) sits in first place of the Eastern conference heading into a three game week.

They’re at Swift Current on Wednesday to face the Broncos and will host the Calgary Hitmen on Friday. Saturday is the annual Medicine Hat News Teddy Bear Toss game, with the Tigers taking on the Prince Albert Raiders.

Christmas is coming

This weekend featured a flurry of Yuletide themed events, and more are on the way.

The Christmas Market at Medalta was held over the weekend, along with the lightings of the town Christmas tree and the annual display at Park Meadows community in Medicine Hat.

Sunshine hand highs around zero are expected throughout the week as the calendar flips over to December on Friday.

In the longer term, the Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a colder than normal winter across the prairies and normal precipitation.
