Mounties in Gull Lake seized 42,000 cartons of cigarettes late last week in what they believe is a case of smuggling.

A release from the Swift Current rural RCMP detachment states officers pulled over a tractor trailer on the Trans-Canada that they say was speeding.

Further investigation and a search warrant executed by the RCMP’s trafficking response unit and the Moose Jaw crime reduction team led them to believe the cargo was tobacco without proper excise tax stamps.

The 46-year-old driver of the semi was charged with three counts of possessing unmarked or unstamped tobacco. The Aldergrove, B.C. resident is next due in Swift Current Provincial Court on Jan. 17.
