City council meets tonight

The 2024 city budget amendments will be the major discussion item at tonight’s city council meeting.

Council members heard an initial update on spending and the size of a proposed tax increase on Oct. 24.

It predicts that higher than first-expected investment income and continued strong power pricing will add millions to whittle down a structural budget gap, but a five per cent property tax increase could be needed to balance the balance the budget.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, or can be watched at the city’s Youtube channel here.

The News coverage of the city budget overview can be found here.

Big night downtown

Large crowds welcomed the Yuletide Season with shopping and events throughout the downtown core on Friday night.

Midnight Madness, an effort by city centre shopkeepers and the Chamber of Commerce, also saw the ceremonial lighting of two Christmas trees in Batus Park.

Street light displays are going up through main routes in the city this week, so be aware of work crews.

Tigers edge Wheat Kings

The Medicine Hat Tigers picked up a win in their lone weekend contest, winning 3-2 on the road Saturday at Brandon against the Wheat Kings.

Brandon product Ethan McCallum made 26 saves and Cayden Lindstrom scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season for the game winner.

The Tigers (14-6-2) remain tied for first place in the Eastern conference and host the Regina Pats at Co-op Place on Wednesday and the Wheat Kings on Saturday.

Weather waning?

A beautiful weekend should carry forward into the week with highs in the mid teens, but cooler weather is expected to settle in by the end of the week.
