Two Medicine Hat youth who were approved for a Make a Wish in 2020 have finally been able have their wishes fulfilled. While not all children want a travel wish, some ask for playground equipment or a gaming console or a room makeover, these two wanted to take trips. The pandemic caused their wishes to be delayed and then the two boys had to wait for a time when their respective trips wouldn’t interfere with their schooling.

Everett, 7, was diagnosed with leukemia when he was three years old, and his wish was to go to Disneyland. Everett is in Grade 2 at St. Patrick’s School, who are on break this week, so he was able to fly out with his family on Saturday for the long-awaited trip.

Carson, 16, also has next week off from Monsignor McCoy High School and left for Montego Bay, Jamaica on Sunday.

“He wanted to go some place warm, and he wanted to be by the water on a beach and just spend time with his family,” said Donna Serr, co-ordinator for Make a Wish in Medicine Hat. Carson was diagnosed with a brain tumour and Serr explained that he still receives regular checkups but was well enough to go on his travel wish.

Serr volunteers with Make a Wish and is responsible for connecting with families once their wish is approved to ensure they feel welcome and comfortable. She also organizes Walk for Wishes in schools, with Mother Teresa raising $3,200 for Medicine Hat in their walk last week.

“I’m just so happy these two kids are now able to have their wishes after waiting so long. It’s the magic of it all coming to be and to see how excited they are to be able to do this and to have the privilege and to be healthy enough to have their wish come true,” stated Serr.
