https://www.medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews CF Industries said its first green ammonia plant will be “mechanically complete” by the end of 2023 as the company plans to retool its network of plants and transportation lines to reduce carbon emissions. The statement came in third-quarter financial reports, released Wednesday, which showed the company posted net earnings of US$1.25 billion in the first nine months of 2023. That’s lower by half from the same period in 2022 as both pricing and input costs of natural gas fell. “Global nitrogen industry fundamentals remain favourable and forward energy curves suggest attractive margin opportunities for the foreseeable future,” said Tony Will, president of the fertilizer maker which has a major production facility in Medicine Hat. CF’s green ammonia project at the Donaldsonville, LA. complex is one of several lower-carbon capital projects underway by the firm in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. It could be operational in early 2024, according to a presentation, and would be capable of producing 20,000 tonnes per year of ammonia that has electrolyzed water as its feed stock, rather than the hydrogen split from natural gas. A “blue ammonia” project – involving sequestered carbon dioxide from methane reforming – at Donaldsonsville, could be online in 2025. Late in the quarter, CF announced a joint development and off-take agreement with South Korean steelmaker POSCO for its Blue Point, LA. blue ammonia project now being planned. 9
