With six more deaths in July, Hat remains on pace for record opioid poisonings

Opioid deaths in Medicine Hat rose again in the latest available figures reported by the province.

Six Hatters died of opioid related poisoning in July – matching a monthly high – a trend that could see a record number of deaths recorded in 2023.

Through seven months of the year, a total of 27 local deaths have been reported by the Alberta Substance Use Surveillance system. The highest yearly total in Medicine Hat was 36 in 2021. There were 20 in 2022.

Lethbridge has recorded 91 deaths to date in 2023, compared to the previous whole-year record of 77.

Of the 1,104 deaths across the province to July 31, 755 were in Calgary or Edmonton.
