Store fronts on S. Railway Street came tumbling down this week, potentially to create new parking stalls for redevelopment of the Assiniboia Hotel.
An excavator worked away Thursday to clear rubble from the now 50-foot gap between the hotel and the two-storey “Boyd Block,” which is the current home of Being Human employment services.
The single-storey store fronts had been vacant and boarded for a number of years. They are listed as “vacant” and a car stereo retailer in 1996 business directories.
Calls by the News to Wahl Construction, which is both the redeveloper of the Assiniboia and carrying out the demolition work next door, were not returned Thursday.
The company has been in the process of renovating the Assiniboia since it was acquired in the spring of 2021, but hasn’t publicly announced its plans for the site.
