Rattlers Roundup: Men and women soccer teams sweep weekend

The Medicine Hat College Rattler soccer teams had winning weekends.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted the Ambrose Lions at the College on Sunday.

The Rattlers women’s team opened the afternoon’s action with an 8-0 win. Medicine Hat jumped ahead on an Ambrose own goal before Jaycee Berggren rattled off two straight. Kayla Hole then found the back of the net to put MHC up 4-0 at the half.

Keandra Leslie scored twice with Maisa Rebello and Molly Morris each adding goals in the second half for the 8-0 victory. Rylan Morhart picked up the shutout in net without facing a shot.

The Rattlers men’s team put together a strong second half for their 4-1 win over Ambrose. Jire Nzeyimana opened the game’s scoring for Medicine Hat before the Lions scored to tie it up at 1-1 at the half. Tata Mugisha and Joel Lehr scored for the Rattlers, and an Ambrose own goal gave the Rattlers’ the 4-1 victory. Maksymilian Slaweta made three saves in the win.

The Rattlers women (3-4) and men (1-3-2) are on the road this weekend, as they face the Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday and the Olds College Broncos on Sunday.

Cross Country

The Rattlers’ cross-country team was once again led by the duo of Becky Ross and Madison Scrimger.

The Rattler duo placed first and third respectively at The Kodiak Open in Lethbridge on Saturday, the third race on the ACAC calendar.

Collectively, the Rattlers women placed second in the team standings, behind the winning team from Red Deer Polytechnic. The other MHC women taking part in the race included Mizuki Iwata (19th), Pyper Gill (22nd), Kabri Stickel (31st) and Annika Marshall (36th).

The MHC men placed sixth in the 8 km race, led by Harrsion Lawson in 22nd place and Shintaro Iwata in 26th place. Other Rattler finishers included Justin Jager (29th), Tristan Scrimger (30th), Gage Smith (34th), Spencer Wilson (36th) and Jon McKinley (44th).

Local para-athlete Keegan Kolody placed sixth against the non-college runners in the race.

Next up for the Rattlers runners cross-country team is the Augustana Open on Oct. 14 in Camrose.
