A program that provides bicycle tours for residents of local nursing is expanding thanks to a donation from an oil company that operates in the region.

“Cycling Without Age” volunteers use a stable “trishaw” pedal bike to take seniors on outings and will now add another vehicle thanks to a $10,000 donation from International Petroleum Corp.

“I’ve seen the success of Cycling Without Age in a number of cities and am happy that we could support such an impactful volunteer organization,” said Kevin Golem, the company’s operations manager in the Suffield region.

The local initiative was launched by the “Bike Medicine Hat” organization with two vehicles located at the Cypress View Foundation and Masterpiece Southlands.

“We are so grateful for this incredible gift and are currently in discussion with several sites to determine where this trishaw will be housed,” says program co-ordinator Julie Lacasse.

Scholarship funds

CanCarb Ltd. will provide $15,000 in scholarships over the next five years for Medicine Hat College students registered in power engineering, business and science programs, it was announced Sept. 15.

The bursaries are part of a long relationship between the college and the local manufacturer, which is increasing its involvement in a number of local initiatives this year to commemorate its 50th anniversary in operation.
