YWCA Lethbridge & District has launched a new event after retiring its long-running Royal Gala.
The organization on Tuesday announced that after 25 years and more than $1 million raised, that event has been retired.
Now the YWCA will be hosting its first gala presented by a different sponsor. The date of the gala will be Nov. 28, also known as Giving Tuesday which is the international day of giving.
The gala raises money for Harbour House Emergency Shelter, Hestia Youth Homes, safe visitation and the Amethyst Project.
According to statistic provided by the YWCA, last year 1,562 women and children were turned away from Harbour House because of a lack of beds. Residing there in 2022 were 340 women and 82 children.
The Hestia program served 15 youth in 2022 while the Amethyst Project served 91 people with 12 per cent of those being under the age of 18.
