Root Cellar’s Amazing Race for Hunger returns Saturday

The Root Cellar’s second annual Amazing Race for Hunger begins today at 9 a.m.

Several teams of two will work through challenges that will send them around the city. The event will begin at the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub (formerly known as the Medicine Hat Food Bank).

Jeremy Hudson of My96 FM radio and Melissa Mullis executive director of the Root Cellar will be hosting the event all day from the Root Cellar.

The event raises money for the Emergency Food Pantry at the Root Cellar. The event will be live-streamed on Facebook and the community is invited to tune in.

“We have camera people all over the city,” says Mullis.

There are more than 80 volunteers and staff running the event.

The teams have fund-raised so they can have advantages or disadvantages throughout the day in style of The Amazing Race television program.

“They really have their heart in it and they’re really excited to raise money for us and support the community,”says Mullis.

The contestants will undergo physical and mental challenges in the a quest to win a $4,000 prize.

All of the race stops will be at community partnership locations.

Spectators can get involved by purchasing 50/50 tickets at rafflebox.ca or at mhrootcellar.com for the online raffle which is currently just under $4,000.

This winner will be drawn live on the Facebook broadcast at 4 p.m.

People can also call in to support their favourite team and make donations to change the game by giving advantage or disadvantages to the teams at 403-528-4313 ext 1.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the community spirit,” says Mullis.

The show will run until it is over when the last team crosses the finish line.

“I’m excited to come together at the end and celebrate a job well done.”
