The Medicine Hat Stampede Parade route will cause some road closures in the city’s centre on Thursday, but transit routes shouldn’t be disrupted for very long, according to city transportation officials.

The parade will begin at 9 a.m., led by Olympian Sage Watson as honourary marshal.

That will require the closure of First, Second and Third streets from Fourth Avenue to South Railway Street, as well as the avenues inclusive. It concludes at the Intersection of Fourth Avenue becoming River Road.

Maple Avenue Bridge, Finlay Bridge and Maple Avenue between First and Third streets will also be closed at 8:30 a.m. to prep for the entourage of horse riders, carriages, floats and dignitaries.

Buses will run on the route until 8:50 a.m., and operated on slightly adjusted routes for the duration with the exception of Route 20 in the Flats.

Some parking restrictions will also begin at 7:30 a.m. in the North Flats where staging takes place, namely on the 800 and 900 blocks of Second and Third streets, as well as some parts of Woodman and Allowance avenues.

Routes 10 and 11, servicing northeast and northwest Crescent Heights, will terminate at the Hockey Hounds arena, where a shuttle will move riders downtown.

Pancakes, get your pancakes

The Wednesday of Stampede Week features the longstanding Medicine Hat Lodge Breakfast put on by the Kiwanis Club, from 7-10 a.m. before the gates of the fair grounds open at noon.

This year, another hotel is joining in on the action. The Premier Best Western, near Strachan Road, will also host a pancake breakfast at a similar time.

On Thursday’s parade day, Earl’s on Dunmore Road will host a breakfast and the annual Co-op breakfast is set for Friday at the 13th Avenue foodstore.
