Medicine Hat equalled a 133-year-old daily heat record on Monday as temperatures rose to 38.9C – the same reading taken in at the town of Medicine Hat, N.W.T., on July 24, 1890.

That is according to Environment Canada, which has records for the city dating to 1881, and a number of new records in the region were set as heat warnings continued.

Relief in the form of cooler temperatures was forecast to come into the region on Tuesday evening. Overnight lows are expected in the lower teens and daytime highs in the 26C range from Thursday through Saturday.

Among the hottest locales on Monday was Onefour, near the Port of Wildhorse, at 38.6C. That was 1.4C hotter than the same date in 1931. Milk River, at 38.6C, beat a 20-year-old record of 33.6C. The mercury rose to a record 35.9C at Esther, Alta., a ghost town north of Oyen in Special Areas No. 3.

In southwest Saskatchewan, new records were set in Maple Creek (38.7C), Leader (38.5C), Eastend (36.3C) and Cypress Hills park townsite (34.8).

Around Alberta, Lethbridge as well beat a 119-year old record with 36.9C, while Calgary (35.1C), Taber (37.7C), Coronation (34.7C). Crowsnest Pass (31.6C), Drumheller (36.9C) all set new records for July 24.
