Youth in Philanthropy program doles out $10,590 to local charities

The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta’s Youth in Philanthropy program was responsible for doling out $10,590 to charitable organizations chosen by local students and youth groups. A record number of groups took part in the initiative this year, with 12 different charities chosen to receive funding through the program. “Participating in the YIP program was such a rewarding and positive experience for our student leadership group,” River Heights teacher Kristen Bowal says in a CFSEA release. “Our students learned the power of giving back to the community. The program is set up to support students to engage in connecting with the organization they choose to support. Our students were invested and learned many valuable skills in the process. Thank you for building future leaders who give back.” Participating groups are tasked with researching their community’s areas of need and working directly with charities working within those sectors.” Bowal’s group from River Heights chose to give its $590 to the Ronald McDonald House. Three groups from Crescent Heights High School took part. Group 1 selected Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres for a donation of $600, while dedicating $400 to McMan Youth, Family and Community Services. Group 2 chose to put $600 to the SPCA and $400 to the CORE Association, while Group 3 sent $600 to the Prairie Gleaners Society and $400 to the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society. Medicine Hat High School opted to direct all $1,400 of its available funding to the Saamis Immigration Services Association. St. Luke’s Outreach in Brooks chose to put $1,200 into the Brooks Animal Protection Society and $200 into the Brooks Food Bank. Cherry Coulee Christian Academy directed its $1,400 to the South Eastern Alberta Safety Alliance Society. St. Michael’s in Bow Island split its $1,400 evenly between the Prairie Gleaners Society and Saamis Immigration, while Senator Gershaw chose to give its $1,400 to its local Family and Community Support Services. 11-10
