The Medicine Hat Mavericks started their weekend on a high note. The Mavericks picked up a win on the road Friday night, beating the Moose Jaw Miller Express 6-2. Medicine Hat entered the contest off a 8-7 win Thursday at Athletic Park over the Swift Current 57’s. After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks opened the scoring with a two-run top of second inning. Third baseman Nathan Tarver drove in a run with a RBI double and right fielder Brady Bean drove in Tarver from second base five pitches later. Moose Jaw answered back in the bottom of the frame to tie the game up at 2-2. That was the last offence Moose Jaw would manage as the Mavericks pitching staff held the Miller Express to seven hits in the remaining seven innings. Adam Golby started the game for Medicine Hat and struck out four in his five innings of work while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. The Mavericks grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI double from shortstop Bret Carrell. They padded their lead in the next inning, scoring three runs for the final score of 6-2. Catcher Andrew Savage drove in a pair with a RBI double while advancing designated hitter Dominic VanDoorne to third base, who scored on a wild pitch five pitches later. Kyle Calzadiaz took the ball in the sixth inning and struck out two batters while allowing four hits and a walk in his three innings of work. Matthew Krall made his season debut in the ninth inning, striking out one batter while not allowing a base runner. The Mavericks (11-11) are back in action Saturday when they host the Miller Express at Athletic Park for a 7:05 p.m. contest. They will also host Moose Jaw on Sunday and Monday. 8
