The Medicine Hat Mavericks ended their weekend on a sour note.
The Mavericks lost 12-3 Sunday afternoon at Athletic Park against the Swift Current 57’s.
‘We just didn’t put the complete package together,” Head coach Mark Goodman said. “We had 11 hits but only three runs, made a handful of errorsĀ and didn’t make the right pitch decisions we needed to. So it’s and unfortunate loss but these two days off are definitely needed off before we start this stretch coming up.”
Medicine Hat entered the game off a 7-2 win in Brooks against the Bombers on Saturday. They split the four-game weekend series 2-2, with a 18-4 loss at Athletic Park against the Okotoks Dawgs on Friday and a 7-5 win against Swift Current on Thursday, also at AP.
Swift Current got on the board first and led the Mavericks 7-1 after four innings. Medicine Hat’s run came on a sacrifice hit from first baseman Tory Nelson.
The 57’s added a few more runs, scoring twice in the sixth inning and another in the seventh frame for the 10-1 lead. The Mavericks plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on back-to-back RBI singles from shortstop Johnny Vulcano and Nelson.
Swift Current rounded out the game with two more runs in the top of the ninth inning for their final lead of 12-3.
Tim Carlson started the game for Medicine Hat and pitched 3.2 innings with two strikeouts while allowing seven runs on eight hits and a walk. Garrett Nicholson came in relief and pitched 1.2 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Kyle Calzadiaz came into the game in the fifth and pitched 2.1 innings with two strikeouts while allowing a run on two hits. Dylan Weaver worked the remaining 1.1 innings registering a strikeout, allowing a run on two hits.
The Mavericks (9-10) are off Monday and Tuesday before heading to Okotoks to face the Dawgs and kick off a stretch of 10 games in nine days.
