YELLOWKNIFE – RCMP in the Northwest Territories say people trying to call emergency services are not able to get through by calling 911.

They say people requiring urgent police service should dial the telephone prefix for their community followed by 111.

The territorial government says residents who can’t reach local emergency services should go directly to their community’s RCMP detachment or health centre.

Police say they are working with the territorial Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, which administers the 911 system and will notify the public when the service is restored.

The territory rolled out 911 service for the first time in November 2019.

The 2021-22 annual report on the service says it received more than 15,800 calls that fiscal year, more than half for police.
