Property tax increases in Brooks top those in the Hat this year.

Brooks council approved rates on May 1 that will see the median home tax bill rise $107 compared to 2022, while business taxes rise $201 for every million dollars of assessed value.

A new vacant non-residential property would pay an additions $188 per million, but only bring in a total of $118,000, compared to $4 million from the general business property class.

The current Brooks city budget calls for an additional $722,000 in tax revenue in 2023, which will add about 6 per cent overall to tax bills. Total tax revenue in 2023 will be $13.6 million.

Medicine Hat recently approved a 3.9 per cent increase for residential classes (adding $74 per year to the average home bill), and 2.7 per cent for non-residential properties ($86 per million of assessment value).

The Brooks average home tax bill would rise to $2,657 in 2023, according to background information presented to that council.

Redcliff debates rates

Redcliff town council was scheduled to debates its 2023 tax rates on Monday night, and proposal to increase tax revenue by 3.6 per cent this year.

That comes with mill rate adjustments that would see average home in the own see and average of $54 added to tax bills.

Redcliff also uniquely calculates effect on non-residential and business bills as an “average business” with an assumed value of $520,000. The change would add $316, including provincial and Cypress View Foundation levies.

The median Redcliff home is one assessed at $269,000.
