EDMONTON – Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting following the fatal stabbing of a woman and child in Edmonton.

Police were called to Crawford Plains School shortly before 5 p.m. Friday for reports that a man had stabbed two people outside the building before running off.

When officers arrived, they found the body of a 35-year-old woman and an injured 11-year-old child, who was rushed to hospital but died of their injuries.

Two other responding officers found a man matching the suspect description nearby, and eventually shot the suspect after an altercation.

The man is in hospital in critical condition.

Police have confirmed the victims were a mother and her child, but it is unknown if they knew the suspect.

The Edmonton Police homicide section is investigating the deaths, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting of the suspect.
