A state of emergency caused by rising river levels in Swift Current has been lifted as snow showers this week produced less moisture than anticipated.

The city that had enacted emergency plans and erected barricades on April 11 declared at 10 a.m. Friday that they considered the situation manageable going forward.

“Any increased water volume from snow melt, including the amount anticipated from the Cypress Hills Region, should be manageable and will not bring the creek to maximum capacity,” read a statement issued.

Some road closures and barricades will remain in place, but others will be removed systematically.

On April 18, the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency released water from the Duncairn Dam to receive new runoff, thereby raising creek levels in the city after residents were offered sandbags and some areas were put under warning.

Hit and run

Brooks RCMP are looking for the driver of a dark blue or black car they say struck a bicyclist and drove away on Thursday evening.

Mounties say the accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. as the vehicle left a parking lot at Eighth Ave. W and Third Street W in that city. The cyclist was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information should contact Const. Michael Hagel at 403-794-4400, local police or Crimestoppers (1-800-222-8477).
