ABERLE, FLOYD DENNIS

ABERLE, FLOYD DENNIS April 9, 1949 March 26, 2023
The family of Floyd Dennis Aberle are deeply saddened to share the news of his passing on March 26, 2023 at the age of 73 years. Floyd will be dearly missed by his wife of 55 years Phyllis Aberle of Calgary, his son Dennis (Alison) of Calgary, daughter Karen (Anthony) of Wetaskiwin, granddaughter Nicole (Jake) of Airdrie, grandson Jacob of Calgary, as well as his extended family especially his brother-in-law, dear friend, and mentor Wally Attrill and longtime friend Bev Karpiuk.
Floyd was predeceased by his father Ralph on September 19, 1967, his brother Barry on February 13, 2005, his mother Magdalene Hasper on November 24, 2017, his sister Darlene on March 19, 2022 and his lifelong best friend John Karpiuk on June 24, 2017.
Floyd was born in Medicine Hat AB on April 9, 1949. He grew up on the flats and enjoyed spending time out on the surrounding family farms. Floyd was always a hard worker and began doing so at a young age with various jobs including pulling vegetables at the Japanese Gardens, Shamrock Bottling delivering Coca-Cola, and as an operator for NW Nitro Fertilizer. He met Phyllis in 1965 and they were married on July 1, 1967. They welcomed Dennis to the family in 1968 and Karen in 1973. The family moved to Calgary in 1971 and Floyd began working for the Calgary Stampede as foreman of the Corral. He had a brief stint as a Greyhound bus driver in the late 70s before returning to the Stampede.
Floyd spent 30 years working with the Stampede in various building operations positions including being the first Operations Manager of the new Saddledome through the 1988 Olympics and then as Manager, Facilities of the other buildings on Stampede Park until his retirement on April 30, 2005. Without missing a beat, he was approached by several Stampede Volunteer Committees and spent the next 17 years as a volunteer with the Stampede Showband, Western Showcase, and Kids’ Day Breakfast Committees.
Floyd and Phyllis loved travelling, including going on 17 cruises, often with other family and friends. All his life, he also had a true love for motorcycles. Floyd chose to give up his first bike when Dennis was young and money was tight, but was able to hit the road again in the early 80s when he purchased his first Gold Wing. For the past 40+ years Floyd has shared this love with many friends including Terry Jackson, cousin Ken Aberle and son Dennis, with whom he went on annual trips.
Floyd’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the compassionate care team that looked after him during his last days at the Dulcina Hospice at St. Marguerite Manor, as well as the incredible staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Hao for her compassion and guidance over the past 2.5 years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Mountain View Funeral Home (Prairie View Chapel, 1605 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Monday, April 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception.
