TORONTO – The National Newspaper Awards have named the finalists for its annual journalism honours and given six nominations to The Canadian Press.

The national newswire agency received the nods in breaking news, sports and various photography categories.

The team’s coverage of the “Freedom Convoy” protests over the 36-hour period after the first trucks arrived in Ottawa is up for the Stuart M. Robertson Award for Breaking News.

Reporter Lori Ewing was nominated for her “persistent coverage” of athlete protests against Canada’s safe sport crisis.

Nathan Denette received a nod in the general news photo category for his photo of Pope Francis apologizing to Indigenous elders and survivors of residential schools. Dustin Patar was nominated in the same category for a CP photo of people in Iqaluit collecting water through holes carved in the ice of a river.

In the sports photo category, Frank Gunn was nominated twice – once for an image of a skier whipping down Lake Louise on her way to winning a world cup title, and again for capturing a collision between two Blue Jays players.

The Globe and Mail led with 19 nominations in 16 categories, while La Presse received 14 and the Toronto Star received seven on its own, plus one that it shares with The Narwhal and another with the Halifax Chronicle Herald.

This year’s nominations celebrate 87 finalists, nearly half of whom are being recognized by the awards for the first time.

Winners will be announced at a live gala at The Design Exchange in Toronto on Friday, May 5.
