The Medicine Hat High rural wrestling teams added more provincial banners to their trophy case.
The Hawks wrestlers competed at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association championship in Grande Prairie last weekend, winning nine medals and two first-place team banners.
Despite two wrestlers not making weight and having to pay a fine and moving up weight categories, the Hat High wrestlers found their success.
Both William and Hannah Kozakewich, Mazen Al-Yassine and Nathan MacKinnon each won all their matches earning themselves gold medals. Losing only one match during the weekend netted Abdullah Sindi, Kianna Ivey and Siri Timm a silver.
After losing only one match at the wrong time, Clark Cambpell and Zaynna Willoughby ended up with a bronze medal each.
With the rest of their wrestlers finishes high enough to earn significant points, both the boys and girls tams won championship banners, beating out the LCI Rams in both groups.
The Hat High boys banner marks the 13th year in a row of coming in first place. On the girls side, their banner win is the fifth time the Hawks have won.
