Another service rig has set up inside city limits to work on abandoning a natural gas well.

The City of Medicine Hat energy division announced on Monday it has engaged a contract crew to perform the downhole work this week after “less obtrusive” methods such coil tubing and wireline equipment were unsuccessful.

The well is located behind Parkland Toyota, which faces Strachan Road, but the site is visible from the 13th Avenue underpass at the Trans-Canada Highway. Equipment was visible there Tuesday, and the city release states work could continue for at least five days.

There should be no impact to traffic, but anyone in the area may notice increased noise from the operations. Fencing will secure the worksite.

The work follows month-long lane reductions on Kipling Street as a service rig worked to abandon a privately owned well which encroached near the road way.
