The City of Brooks is now accepting applications for a two-year urban hen-keeping pilot program.

Homeowners in that city can apply for one of 10 licences to keep up to four hens for egg production. Sales or onsite slaughter is prohibited, as are roosters.

The licences, which are no cost during the pilot, require owners to provide a certified coop and meet a number of other standards relating to setup and maintenance. Two licences have been issued since the project was approved at the Jan. 3 city council meeting.

This fall Medicine Hat city council rejected a motion to have administrators prepare background on a potential bylaw here. That would have consisted of a survey of urban hen bylaws and programs in Alberta created since the issue was last debated locally in 2012.
