MARK ARMSTRONG
MARK ARMSTRONG February 6, 1963 ~ December 8, 2022
Mark was never sick a day in his life and at the age of 59 years on December 8, 2022, he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep. Mark was a jack of all trades; fixing cars and anything if it needed fixing. And what didn’t work, he went to the library for books and soon got everything working. Mark went to college to become a chef and OMG his yummy cooking will be missed by all! Mark came to Canada on a Battle group to BATUS where he met Denise. It was love at first sight as in 1985, they were married, celebrating over 37 years of companionship this year. He was the proud father of son, Darrell (Niki); daughter, Nikita and proud grandfather to his three grandchildren, Jordan, Ryan and Nova, whom he adored greatly. He also leaves behind his older brother, Andrew (Chris); younger brother, Neil (Aidan) as well as numerous nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Eileen. Mark’s two favourite pastimes included camping and fishing. He taught everyone how to do these things. Campfires stoked, bags and bags and bags of wood; so much that you couldn’t get into the motorhome! Those who went camping knew how extreme he was. After leaving the army, Mark made Canada his home. He had hair that took him roughly an hour to do and the end result was that it looked like The Stray Cats or Elvis hairdo; he should have had shares in a hairspray company. Mark worked for Barney’s Place for many years and when they retired, he went on to be the foreman at Redcliff Stake and Lath. This is where he made survey stakes and wooden spools for wires, etc. and worked there up until his passing. Mark will be missed terribly by all who knew him especially by Denise, Darrell and Nikita. “RIP Mark, we all love you!” A Celebration of Mark’s life will be held in the spring/summer. Leonard “Len” Schwabe of Medicine Hat passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022 at the age of 91 years, beloved husband of the late Lorna Lorraine Schwabe. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Lorraine Mary Louise “Lou” Haag, Leonard Benjamin Sidney “Sid” Schwabe (Tracy Laubenstein), and Rhonoda Lee “Ronnie” Melnyczuk; six grandchildren, Lindsey (Lonnie) Gebhart, Nikki (Denny) O’Connor, A.J. Schwabe, Melory (Matty) Byers, Megan Melnyczuk (Greg Heukshorst), and Wasyl Melnyczuk; nine great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mary Schwabe; two sons-in-law, Dennis Haag and Taras Melnyczuk; sister, Melba (Emil) Rath and brother, John (Mary) Schwabe. JAMES STEELE 1947 – 2022
James Steele of Red Deer, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at the age of 75 years. He will be greatly missed by his coordinator Karen, roommates Diane and Jeffrey and his neighbor and friend Rena. James was born on September 18, 1947 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Fred and Doreen Steele and a brother of Judy and Jack. He relocated to Red Deer and lived there with a zest for life, a great sense of humour and a passion for salty snacks and Lindor chocolates. James had a keen memory for birthdays and dates of his workers and friends. He also collected coins of many different varieties and once he knew the birth year of any of those same workers and friends, he would give them a coin with that year on it, once he acquired it. James loved collecting playing cards and would always want to purchase a new deck with different images on them such as flowers, giving him the nickname of “king of hearts”. He would study his new deck in depth. Telling jokes, his great sense of humour and his ability to come up with nicknames for those around him made James just fun to be with. He will be missed. The graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant Pat Grisonich officiating. LOREN HOSFIELD 1943 – 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Pastor Loren Dale Hosfield on December 8, 2022, at the age of 79 years. Pastor Loren is survived by his sister Carol (Michael) Blair or Billings, Montana, Carol’s daughter-in-law Wendy Treglown and her children; Kira, Drew (Catherine); Tory Bond (Daniel), Allyssa Reese (Colton); Michael’s children; Shawn Blair (Chris) and Scott (Katherine) Blair; his close friends Yoka and Bob Redekop as well as Loren’s many friends throughout the world who loved and cherished him. He was predeceased by his mother Anita Hosfield and his father Clark Hosfield as well as his nephew Marc Treglown and Michael’s son Michael Blair. Loren was born in Wolfpointe, Montana on October 4, 1943. He attended school there until grade four when his family moved to Minneapolis in 1953 and he finished his grade school education. He then continued his studies at the University of Minneapolis until he was drafted in to the U.S. Army and stationed in Bamberg, Germany. Upon returning home from the service, Loren followed his calling to become a Pastor. He attended North Western Lutheran Theological Seminary and was ordained on June 3, 1973, as a Lutheran Pastor. His first call was to Edenwald, Saskatchewan where he served several parishes for seven years. In 1980, he accepted a call to “Lord of Life” church in Edmonton where he ministered until 1989. At that time he accepted a call to Victory Lutheran Church in Medicine Hat where he served for nineteen years until retiring. Pastor Loren loved geography, history and became a renowned traveller! His travels took him to many countries throughout the world. Numerous trips were made to Jerusalem, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. He would often plan tours for people to accompany him to the Holy Land…acting as “tour guide” for the trip. These were some of his favorite times. Loren lived his life from his “heart”. The church was his home and he would spend endless hours there! The doors were always open to each and everyone always being welcomed with open arms by Pastor Loren. Many community groups were active and held functions and meetings at Victory. It became the “hub” of activity within the community! Pastor Loren was a Chaplain for Palliative Care at the Medicine Hat Hospital for a number of years and was always on call 24/7 day or night. When he became aware of a need – he did not hesitate. He was a faithful, devoted servant to the Lord and a shepherd to all. He was loving, kind, generous, caring and had the most fantastic sense of humour and wit. He was a devoted Coca Cola fan and you would always find a “Coke” close by wherever he was. Pastor Loren will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him. We will miss him dearly but we will forever treasure all the memories he has left with us. We would like to thank Meadow Ridge Seniors Centre and Riverview Age Care for the care provided during his stay. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at Victory Lutheran Church on Saturday from 12 noon to 12:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in Victory Lutheran Church (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Roland Weisbrot officiating.
