WHL Roundup: Benson’s hat trick leads Ice past Chiefs 6-3 for second straight win

WINNIPEG – Zach Benson recorded a hat trick and one assist as the Winnipeg Ice cruised past the lowly Spokane Chiefs 6-3 on Friday.

Conor Geekie, with two goals and one assist, and Vladislav Shilo also scored for Winnipeg (24-4-0), which has won two in a row. Daniel Hauser made 25 saves.

Tommaso De Luca scored two goals while Carter Streek added the other for Spokane (5-19-0-1). Cooper Michaluk stopped 38-of-43 shots.

Entering the third period tied at 2-2, Benson and Geekie each scored their second of the night to flip the momentum of the game.

After De Luca made it a 4-3 game a few minutes later, Benson capped his hat trick with a power play marker at 16:53 of the final frame before Shilo added an empty netter under two minutes later.

KENNEWICK, WA. – Tyson Greenway netted the game-winning goal 21 seconds into overtime as Tri-City (13-13-0) earned a comeback win over Prince George (14-13-1). Down 3-1 early in the third period, the Americans scored three unanswered to close out the contest.

PRINCE ALBERT, SASK. – Riley Ginnell scored two goals and Regina (15-12-1-1) defeated Prince Albert (10-17-2). Stanislav Svozil added the other while Drew Sim made 25 saves.

KELOWNA, B.C. – Jake Poole notched a goal and an assist as Victoria (5-21-3) used an early lead to edge Kelowna (10-13-2). The Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held off a Rockets from tying it for the final 11:42 of the third.
