Police make one arrest after lockdown at Quebec junior college south of Montreal

SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, Que. – Police south of Montreal say a male suspect is under arrest after a junior college was locked down Friday morning.

There are no reports of injuries, Sgt. Jérémie Levesque with the police of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., said in an interview. The police operation is ongoing and the lockdown remains in effect, he added.

Images are circulating on social media of a man wearing what appears to be a flak jacket being arrested by police officers.

The school – Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu – ordered students and staff to barricade themselves into closed rooms and to keep the lights off at the behest of the police department in the city located about 40 kilometres south of Montreal.

Police established a security perimeter around the college and restricted access to the school.

Nathalie Beaudoin, the college’s director general, says parents, students and others are being asked to stay away from the college.

Beaudoin says all college activities for the day are cancelled.
