Floral workshop adds pumpkin spice to fall decor

By Justin Seward - Lethbridge Herald on October 11, 2022.

Blooms, Flowers and Gifts has the pumpkin spice feeling going on during a workshop at their location on Mayor Magrath Drive on Saturday.
The Pumpkin Spice workshop was a part of the themed workshops that are hosted throughout the year including Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter that allow for participants to put a certain flower arrangement together in a pumpkin centrepiece.
“The individuals come, we supply everything, we teach them how to put it together and then they get to go home with a finished product,” said Susan Jorgensen, co-owner of Blooms, Flowers and Gifts with husband Colin.
Participants get assistance with what flowers to use and the technique.
“We teach them how to cut the stems sharp so that it goes in the foam, we teach them how to handle the flowers and then we teach them the care of the cut flowers after,” she said.
Flowers used include roses, carnations, amaranths, eucalyptus, blue thistle and snow berries.
“It’s fun to decorate your home in the different holidays,” said Jorgensen.
“It’s also like a good community spirit. Usually what we find around the different holiday more community members are out and about. So we just kind of like to open our store a little bit more on the special events and welcome the public in.”
Jorgensen said it’s very casual.
“We like to have fun, “she said.
“We are creative. So we like to encourage the individual’s creativity and we learn a lot from different people as well. We just make it as fun as possible and there’s no pressure, no expectations. We just want you to leave with a cute fun project that you can enjoy at home.”
The Jorgensen’s have owned the floral shop for 11 years and have been doing workshops for the past seven years.
“And every year they grow bigger and bigger,” said Jorgensen.
“Every year we have more workshops and every year we come up with new ideas.”
The Christmas workshop details will be posted on Blooms, Flowers and Gifts website and Facebook pages in November.
Kits are available for pick up if people want to do the project at home.
