Mavericks fall short Monday in Swift Current

The Medicine Hat Mavericks made it interesting late Monday night against the 57’s.

Medicine Hat scored two runs in the top of the ninth but could not come all the way back as they fell 6-2 in Swift Current. The Mavericks came into the contest after beating the Weyburn Beavers 15-1 Sunday.

Swift Current got on the board first with a four run second inning off Mavericks starter Kam Richards. The Lacey, Wash. product pitched six innings Monday with five strikeouts in the loss.

The 57’s added to their lead in the fifth inning with a single run as their lead grew to 5-0. Hunter Boylan took over on the mound for the Mavericks and the lefty threw two innings with two strikeouts. Swift Current capped their lead in the eighth inning with a solo home run as they carried a 6-0 lead into the ninth inning.

The Mavericks got on the board in the ninth inning. Back to back RBI singles from catcher Zach Stark and right fielder David Dell brought the Mavs within four runs of Swift Current with only one out and runners on the corners.

Medicine Hat was not able to plate another run as the 57’s held on to hand the Mavericks the 6-2 loss.

The Mavericks(17-35) are back in action Tuesday as they host the Lethbridge Bulls at Athletic Park for a 7:05 p.m. contest.
