Army of One Comedy Tour comes to Redcliff

A two-in-one comedy show is coming to the Redcliff Legion on Aug. 4.

Scott Porteous and his alter-ego, Herbert Henries, are doing a month-long tour of the Western provinces. The first show is August 2 in Tompkins, Sask., then onto Redcliff, before they head to B.C. for several shows and finish the tour with events in Calgary and Edmonton.

Porteous been doing comedy for close to 20 years. Henries, on the other hand, has been doing it for only seven weeks and has already been on Canada’s Got Talent. Henries got a yes from all four judges and a standing ovation, but was not invited back as it didn’t meet what the producers were looking for. This devastated Henries, according to Porteous, because all he wants is to work.

“I’d like to not have to ride on Herbert’s coat tails,” said Porteous, “But at the moment it’s the way it is. Do comedy and have fun doing it. I love travelling I’d like to eventually do Europe and stuff like that.”

Opening the show will be Porteous, then Henries performs in the second half.

“It can be somewhat complicated and awkward,” stated Porteous. “In Redcliff, a comic from Medicine Hat, Stephanie Foley, will be hosting and it makes it easier. She is a comedian who runs the Mad Hatter Comedy Club.”

Describing himself as an awkward and introverted kid, Porteous didn’t become interested in comedy until he started watching Just for Laughs and other comedy shows.

“It’s not so much about the joke itself but more about how it is formed. I appreciated the art of comedy as well as the entertainment aspect of it. It’s hard for me to watch a show without wanting to be on it. Granted, I’ll be tired after doing 25 shows, but I need to get on stage, to have that platform to entertain and do what I enjoy doing, making people laugh. Herbert just loves being dangerous,” explained Porteous.
