The Medicine Hat U15 Thunder Black brought home a provincial silver medal this weekend from the U15 C Softball Alberta provincial championships in Stettler.
The Thunder Black opened the tournament with a 16-1 win over the Calgary SBR Bombers where Ryleigh Jackiw, the game MVP, threw a no-hitter on the mound.
They won their second contest 18-14 after leading the game early. Morgan Brown, Devon Doerkson and Jackiw all pitched in the win, the game MVP was awarded to Erika Want.
The Thunder Black continued their winning ways in their third game with a 16-13 win over the Foothills Fury. Jackiw started the game in the circle, pitching two innings before Brown came in as relief with three innings. Juli Mittelholtz led the offence by driving in four runs and six Thunder had multiple hits in the win. Neveah Benallack had a home run in the second inning earning the game’s MVP.
The Thunder ended round robin play in first place of pool B.
They lost their fourth game 13-10 to the Hawks U15 Competitive despite outhitting them 11-6. Meadow Lee and Benallack each had three hits to lead the Thunder. Doerkson pitched the whole game in the for Medicine Hat, earning the game MVP.
In the semifinal game against the home team Stettler Storm, the Thunder came from behind to win 10-9. Jackiw earned the game MVP with eight strike outs.
The Thunder lost to the Chestermere Crushers in the finals to earn their silver medals. Clara Butterfield was awarded the Thunder’s game MVP.
The U15 Thunder Black are the second Medicine Hat team to win a provincial medal this summer. The U19 Thunder captured a bronze the previous weekend.
