PETER JOHN HIRSCH

September 16, 1923 ~ July 2, 2022

We announce with great sadness the passing of our father, Peter John Hirsch at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the age of 98 years. Peter was born in Krupp, Saskatchewan on September 16, 1923, and attended school in Nicefield, SK. He married Beatrice Eileen Sulz in Medicine Hat on June 30, 1951. They started their married life in Tunstall, SK., where Peter worked as an elevator agent. A few years later they started farming full-time and moved to Golden Prairie. Peter was very proud to have Beatrice as an equal partner as they continued to expand their farming operation until they purchased their retirement home in Medicine Hat in 1986. Farming was their primary work, although Peter supplemented the farm income working as a hail inspector, crop adjuster and elevator agent. Peter had a witty sense of humour and extraordinary memory for names and families. He could remember the names of most people that he met through his work and travels. Friends often called him to get the name and background on people that they could not remember. Peter was an avid gardener which included flowers, vegetables and prized pumpkins. He curled, bowled and golfed for many years and went to most sports days in the area. Peter also enjoyed socializing with their many friends and was a great neighbor. He served on the Town Council in Golden Prairie for many years. In recent years he watched every Bluejays baseball game that he could. His fondest vacations included a family Christmas vacation to Disney World in 1992, and a road trip with the family to Seattle in 2011, to watch the Blue Jay’s. Peter is survived by his children, Charlotte (Wayne) Wheeler, Braden (Margaret) Hirsch and Michelle Hirsch; grandchildren, Ryan Wheeler, Kevin Gejdos, Jordan Hirsch (Alyssa), Devon Hirsch (Kristy); great-grandchildren, Dylan Gejdos (Sadie Mennie), Brooklyn Gejdos (Steve Clark), Oakley Wheeler, Willow Hirsch and Deacon Hirsch. He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Hirsch; granddaughter, Yvonne Gejdos and daughter-in-law, Lesley Hirsch. A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Lynn McKinnon officiating. The chapel service will be live streamed and those wishing to experience the service are encouraged to visit our website and select the View Broadcast Button on the homepage at service time. A Private family interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship in the Cook Southland Reception Facility thereafter.
