Weather expected to be perfect for Canada Day

By Samantha Johnson Special to the News on June 29, 2022.

The weather for the remainder of the week is looking excellent, with Canada Day predicted to be sunny with a high of 27 C.

According to the Environment Canada website for Medicine Hat, it will be sunny with highs between 25-28 C for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday is showing a 60 per cent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and through the night. The UV index is listed as moderate, but it is still advisable to wear sunscreen when outdoors and/or a hat.

Cypress County is currently under a fire restriction, which means no fireworks are permitted. All outstanding fire permits are suspended until further notice. New fire permits won’t be issued without inspection and approval by the Cypress County Fire Chief or Deputy Chief.

What is allowed under the fire restriction is indoor household fires, solid fuel barbecues (briquettes) and propane or natural gas barbecues and wood pellet smokers. Recreational campfires are permitted that are within a non-combustible unit that is 36 inches in diameter or less. Fires contained in approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreational areas are also permitted.

If you are heading further afield, Waterton Lakes National Park and Banff National Park are both under a fire advisory.

All Alberta ecological reserves and wilderness areas, being protected areas, are always under a fire ban. Cypress Hills and other provincial parks are under a year-round fire restriction. Wood, briquette, propane and natural gas fires are permitted within designated fire pits.

Wishing everyone an enjoyable and safe Canada Day long weekend.
