He’s been the voice of the ATB Financial Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat festival for 18 of its 20 years and on the weekend, Brian Treadwell was honoured for his long-time service.
Organizers presented Treadwell with a painting of the first dragon head of the boats that were used at the festival, a work of art created by Ian Randell, husband of festival chair Diane.
The festival returned to Henderson Lake last weekend after a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Treadwell, whose familiar voice and humour are well-known to listeners of local radio, was at the announcing booth early Saturday and Sunday morning calling the races along with Edmonton’s Darwin Li, who was making his festival debut.
“He’s the voice of the festival,” said Randell Sunday morning as racing opened.
“His voice and his projection and his sense of humour comes across to the whole lake, to the racers and to the spectators,” Randell said as Treadwell and Li bantered over the loudspeakers in the background.
“When we first started the festival, he became part of our Rotary Club and it just made sense that he was here. It was one of those situations,” added Randell.
Randell said she isn’t sure who will be the voice of the festival in the future, calling it a “year-to-year thing,” adding “I’m so glad Brian could come be part of it” for the festival’s 20th event.
