Medicine Hat reminds Jacob Prosch of his home in Minnesota and he feels more at home because of it. He’s also enjoying the lack of humidity.

“I’m not sweating bullets playing baseball here, so I’ll choose here,” Prosch said.

The 20-year-old says he is amazed at how quick the team gelled together but he isn’t questioning it.

“We all came from across Canada and the U.S., it’s ridiculous. I don’t know how to explain it but we’re all very close,” Prosch said.

That closeness translates to the Mavericks’ bullpen, where Prosch said he’s had to learn how to go from being a starter to a reliever, a transition he’s enjoyed.

“I really enjoy having the game coming down to the line,” Prosch said. “The only hard thing was throwing in back-to-back days. My arm gets a little tired sometimes but everything’s all good.”

Prosch and Mavs pitcher Isaiah Bartels both pitch for Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and learned about the Mavs from their school pitching coach.

“He played professional baseball with Mo, (Mavs owner/GM Greg Morrison),” Prosch said. “Mo was looking for more arms and our pitching coach was like, ‘you two guys want to go?’ and of course it was a no-brainer.”

Since donning the Mavericks red Prosch has been used in high-leverage situations, something he said is better with the crowd at Athletic Park.

“It’s unreal, I’ve never played in front of this many people in the stands and it’s amazing,” Prosch said. “For the first few pitches my adrenaline was going and I was really juiced and amped to get in there, but after a while, they’re on my side.”

He says he’s looking to learn as much as he can this summer from the Mavericks coaches and take from their expereince to get better.

Prosch and the Mavericks returned to Athletic Park on Thursday to host the Lethbridge Bulls. That game was not complete by time of press, visit medicinehatnews.com/sports for a full story. The Mavericks are back in action Friday at AP when they host the Regina Red Sox at 7 p.m.
