A police officer accused of assaulting a teenager after his house was the target of a game of ding-dong ditch will have another day in court.

Barry Myles Steiger was charged with one count of assault in June 2021 after police were called to investigated an incident on April 17 that year. At the time police said the 11-year veteran constable exited his house after someone rang his doorbell and ran away, leading to an altercation with another person.

Steiger, who is representing himself in court, has pled not guilty, and on Tuesday was granted a continuation of a one-day trial that was originally scheduled and held last month.

Out-of-town Crown prosecutor Steve Hill is handling the matter which next appears at trial on Sept. 1, Medicine Hat Provincial Court heard on Tuesday.

Steiger was placed on administrative duties at the time the charge was laid.

No matter the result of the legal matter, he will likely face a police conduct review and potential sanctions.
