The McCoy Colts senior baseball team is a close group.

Head coach Cole Schreiber said you can tell how close they are from their arrival to the ball park.

“(They’re) a tight group of guys that seem to want to stand up for one another and show up to the park in packs of six,” Schreiber said. “That shows you right there, coming from school and they want to be the guys.”

This is Schreiber’s first season at the helm at McCoy but not his first as a coach. He said it’s been exciting to get back on the field with this group, which has a lot of older players.

“Lots of Grade 11s and 12s, we’re winning games to start the year and I think everybody agrees that winnings fun,” Schreiber said. “It’s been really good, guys have been awesome, everybody’s kind of buying in and we’re looking to take a title this year, first year back since COVID-19.”

The Sr. Colts have started their season with a 4-0 record and have outscored opponents 63-14 in the process. The Colts cruised to an 11-5 win over Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Tuesday afternoon.

Schreiber said depth across the diamond is the Colts strength for the season.

“Pitching wise we have one or two guys I’d put up against anybody we’ve seen so far,” Schreiber said. “Hitting and our defence has been good, I looked at our order and you know I talk to coaches all the time, we have our one through three (batters) but we have a 5, 6, 7, 8 who are good hitters and would be top of the order bats on other teams. I like the depth of our order, and to this point our defence has been really good, haven’t booted the ball around the whole bunch. All around, I just think we’re pretty strong.”

He said it wasn’t too difficult getting guys going for the season because they had stints of Legion ball while high school baseball didn’t run. Schreiber said the atmosphere of high school ball also plays a role.

“These guys all have experience but first year in that high school atmosphere where you have kids coming out to the games or buddies are watching them play,” Schreiber said. “A new experience for most of them actually but definitely everybody loves it and they’re all getting super excited. You can tell when the game starts, everyone’s rolling in and they’re like, ‘let’s do it.'”

In Tuesday’s win, Caleb Garrecht threw a complete game allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out nine batters for the win. Offensively, the Colts were lead by Zach Ferguson who went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Garrecht helped his cause with two hits and two RBIs. Gavin Smith chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

The varsity Colts next action is Thursday when they host the Magrath Zeniths at Athletic Park, first pitch at 5:30 p.m.
