Nobody likes excess dust in their yards. Fortunately for residents of the County of Forty Mile, time has come again for the Dust Abatement Cost-Sharing Program.
The county will subsidize the first 200 metres of a dust abatement product placed on a developed road allowance near a residence, either for a calcium chloride or with oil. Residents will need to submit the form prior to May 1 in order to have their treatment subsidized.
“The oil option will be 100% dust free, because it’s an oil road,” said Wes Hollingsworth, public works superintendent. “It’s a hard surface. The calcium chloride, we spray it on the gravel. So it’s still a gravel surface, it just cuts the dust back.”
The calcium chloride treatment will cost $1,000 for the 200 metres, where the oil treatment will cost $10,000 for the same distance. If a resident wants more than 200 metres to be treated, it can be done, but it will cost more, varying based on how much work needs to be done to prepare the road, said Hollingsworth.
For those on designated haul routes, which are available on the county website, those 200 metres will be subsidized entirely.
“We’ve been doing this for a lot of years. So I think everybody knows all about it, but they contact me if they need to contact me,” said Hollingsworth. “And if they missed the deadline, it’s not that we won’t do it. It’s just that we won’t subsidize it.”
