Three adults are in custody following an investigation by Medicine Hat police and the ALERT Regional Property Crime Unit regarding the production and distribution of counterfeit bills.

Throughout the month of April, several retailers within the city reported receiving counterfeit Canadian bills. MHPS and RPCU launched an investigation into the bills and on April 19 conducted a residential search which turned up electronics used to manufacture counterfeit currency, as well as “a small amount” of counterfeit bills in denominations of 20s, 50s and 100s.

Three adults were taken into custody. Their identities and connection to the residence is not being released at this time.

Police urge retailers who fear they may have accepted counterfeit currency unknowingly, to contact them so the bill can undergo inspection. All legitimate currency will be returned.

Police also shared tips on how retailers and employees should react if they suspect they are being offered counterfeit currency. They advise retailers politely refuse the bill, ask for another bill, ask the bill holder to confirm the bill’s authenticity with police or contact local police. They ask both retailers and customers to remain courteous and understanding throughout interactions.

Perhaps a “good” description of the counterfeit bills, as in what to look for, would help people identify the counterfeit bills. Yes, we can contact the Police, but I’m sure they are busy enough without looking at every bill in the City. Just a suggestion!!
