Medicine Hat will be well represented at the 2022 Alberta Challenge this May. Five girls from the Alberta Female Hockey League’s Southern Express hockey team – Keira Grant, Keyana Bert, Taya Christie, Jayda Becker and Marley Howes – have all been selected to play in the six-team tournament taking place May 5-8 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. The tryouts took place April 8-10 in Cochrane, where 174 girls from the South participated. “The talent at the regional camps showcased the dedication and commitment each athlete has to pursuing their hockey goals,” said Kendall Newell, Hockey Alberta’s manager of female hockey, in a press release. Alberta Challenge play begins on May 5, with five games. There are four games on May 6 and three on May 7, with the finals set for the 8th. This year’s Alberta Challenge is the first since 2019. Hat represented at Alberta Cup Five U15AAA SEAC Tigers were named to play in the Alberta Cup at the end of April. Medicine Hat’s Josiah Jackson, Hudson Gainer, Ryan Miller, Cash Olson and Colby Gulliver are among the 120 players named to the six teams that will participate in the 2022 Alberta Cup. Players will hit the ice at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer from April 28 – May 1. 10
