Medicine Hat’s best high school badminton players were in playdown action this week looking to book a trip to South zones on April 29. There were 65 athletes in action Wednesday afternoon at Medicine Hat High. McCoy’s Logan Schlosser finished first in the senior boys’ singles division, with Rylan Jackson and Kelton Flaig from Eagle Butte High slotting in at second and third, respectively. Kailey Duchscherer and Kittanna Clark, both from Eagle Butte, were the only two senior girls in singles action, finishing in first and second place. Hat High’s Morgan Wissler and Luca Laliberté were the winning senior boys’ doubles team, with Colton Robinson and Ryker Leipert from Eagle Butte finishing second. Baylie Grunewald and Kathleen Lonctot from Hat High slotted into first place of the senior girls’ doubles, with McCoy’s Nana Tokai and Ema Tokai finishing second. The senior mixed doubles division was taken by Kierra Zentner and Kian Simon from Eagle Butte, finishing ahead of fellow Talons Faith Hockley and Joel Mcleod. At the intermediate level, McCoy’s Josh Gazdag took first in the intermediate boys’ singles, with Caleb Driediger from Eagle Butte finishing second and McCoy’s Alexander Greger taking third. Hat High’s Bailey Quiring was the lone competitor in the intermediate girls’ singles division. Axton Ferguson and Justin Jager from Eagle Butte finished first in the intermediate boys’ doubles, with David Ogunbo and Colton Downey from Hat High taking second. Olivia Worth and Christina Winkler represented Hat High as the only athletes in the intermediate girls’ doubles ranks. Hat High was the only school represented in the intermediate mixed doubles, with Novalee Newton and Demitri Daniluk finishing first and Aisley Maine and Cyton Corsie taking second. At the junior level, McCoy’s Garherd Knauer-Bravo took first in the boys’ singles, with Eagle Butte’s Madden Kelly and Tegan Fox second and third, respectively. Maddy Ferguson of Eagle Butte took first in the junior girls’ division, with Melody Rochelecy from McCoy in second. Hat High’s Tyson Van Ham and Eddie Yang took first place in the junior boys’ doubles, with fellow Hawks Cardston Kenney and Mohammed Khawaja finishing second. Kylee Schule and Nikos Jahandardoost from Hat High finished first, with Eagle Butte’s Kamea Clark and Quinn Olson taking second in the junior girls’ doubles. McCoy finished first and second in the junior mixed doubles division, with Rylan Bender and Olivia Bender finishing first and Nathan Roscoe and Regin Simbulan taking second. After South zones Medicine Hat will host ASAA badminton provincials at Crescent Heights, Hat High and the South Ridge YMCA/Notre Dame Academy on May 6 and 7. 19
