Trying to break into two homes within minutes of each other has netted a 38-year-old man a short jail sentence, and a punch in the face.
At about 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 of last year Hank Lee Tremblay tried to enter a home in the 700 block of 20 Street North while the family was eating dinner. One of the residents called police and said an unknown man showed up at the residence and was fighting with her brother.
The family heard someone trying to break into the house through the front door, and a male member of the family opened the door and began arguing with Tremblay. Tremblay was told to leave, but after he refused and tried to enter the residence the man punched him.
Only minutes before the incident, another resident living a short distance away heard his front door rattling as if someone was trying to break in. The homeowner opened the door and told Tremblay he was at the wrong house, and Tremblay apologized and left.
Police found Tremblay shortly after the incidents as he was walking in front of traffic on 23 Street and 7 Avenue North and he was arrested. Trembley was intoxicated and bleeding from his mouth.
Tremblay pleaded guilty Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to two counts of housebreaking and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He was given credit for time he already served in remand custody, however, which completes his sentence and does not require him to spend any more time in jail.
The Crown noted Tremblay has a previous criminal record that includes convictions for mischief, robbery, assault, break-ins and uttering threats.
Calgary Lawyer Spencer Sikora, who, with the Crown, recommended a 30-day jail sentence, said Tremblay has been doing well since he was previously released on bail, and is currently residing with family in a “sober living” house in Edmonton.
“He has struggled with addiction and he’s telling me that he’s making great progress towards addressing those issues, sir,” Sikora told the judge.
Sikora added Tremblay is also trying to improve his education and has enrolled in a marketing management program.
