Lethbridge City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed a motion presented by Mayor Blaine Hyggen to request support from the province for an increase in the scope of cardiac services offered in the South Zone.
Those improvements include the development of an interventional cardiac services program, known as a Cardiac Catheterization Lab, at the Chinook Regional Hospital.
Hyggen, along with acting mayor Rajko Dodic and councillor John Middleton-Hope all talked about their familiarity with heart issues among family or friends after a presentation from Dr. Michael Auld, associate zone medical director of Chinook Regional Hospital
Currently neither Lethbridge nor anywhere in the South Zone offers evasive emergent and urgent treatment for acute heart attacks. Tests and procedures for cardiac MRI, angiogram, ablation and angioplasty also cannot be treated here with patients having to get those services in Calgary.
The motion also stated that a bolstered cardiac program here would improve and strengthen care in the areas of clinical cardiology, cardiac arrhythmia care, and cardiac imaging, which would result in improved health outcomes for patients.
