A Cypress County man sought by mounties after a highway crash and subsequent auto theft is in custody, the RCMP detachment in Brooks announced Thursday.

A release states that Travis Seitz, 31, was arrested in the hamlet of Duchess about one week after police believe he was injured in a crash on Highway 1A near Brooks on March 2.

At that time, a motorist pulled over to check on condition of passengers in a truck that hit the ditch at a high rate of speed, but was allegedly assaulted by a man and a woman who then took his truck.

Crystal Bigstone, 29, of Brooks, was arrested that day, but authorities put out a call for tips from the public regarding the whereabouts of Seitz.

“From the start of this investigation until the apprehension of both suspects the Brooks RCMP has been supported by the South Eastern ALERT, RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Emergency Response Team, as well as multiple members of the public providing assistance with tips into potential sightings,” said Cpl. Josh Argue of the Brooks detachment. “This is a perfect example of the police and the community working together to bring a safe and successful conclusion to this incident.”

Seitz is charged with robbery, possession of stolen property valued at more than $5,000, driving while prohibited and breaking the terms of his probation.

He is currently in hospital. It is not immediately known when he will appear in court.
